More about Stellaris
Paradox space 4X with a deep modding scene
Stellaris (2016) is Paradox's space 4X strategy. Same modding architecture as the rest of the Paradox lineup, Workshop, Paradox Mods, the launcher, script-driven data, with a Stellaris-specific catalogue centred on species packs, civic additions, ascension perks, and total conversions in the space genre (Star Wars, Star Trek, Mass Effect).
The toolchain
Identical to other Paradox games: Steam Workshop + Paradox Mods + the Paradox Launcher + the same script-driven data model. Stellaris-specific community tools include the modding wiki and the unofficial Patch resources for fixing common issues.
What you'll find on OpenMods
Stellaris mods live primarily on Workshop. GitHub hosts source for the larger TCs and toolchain projects. OpenMods catalogues GitHub-published Stellaris mods.
Practical notes
- Patch compatibility breaks frequently. Stellaris updates more often than CK3 or EU4. Each major version (3.x, 4.x) can break large portions of the catalogue. Pin a version if you have a working mod list and don't want to update.
- DLC interactions are extensive. Stellaris has ~20 DLCs. Each adds ascension paths, megastructures, or species archetypes. Mods often require specific DLCs.
- TC scene is smaller than HoI4's. Star Wars mods (multiple competing TCs), Star Trek New Horizons, and ZOFE (Zenith of Fallen Empires) are the headliners.
- Performance scales with empire count and galaxy size. Large galaxies + many mods + late-game = slow.
