More about Planet Zoo
A zoo sim with a modest community modding scene
Planet Zoo (2019) is Frontier Developments's zoo management sim. Frontier hasn't released official modding tools, but the community has built tools around the game's data formats, and a curated Steam Workshop hosts player-created blueprints (pre-built structures players share) and scenery packs.
The mod catalogue is meaningfully smaller than the major modded games, most "modding" in Planet Zoo is blueprint sharing rather than code-level modification. True asset and gameplay mods exist but are constrained.
The toolchain
- Steam Workshop: primary distribution for blueprints and scenarios.
- Community asset tools: for the small set of true asset mods.
- No official mod SDK: Frontier hasn't released modding tools.
What you'll find on OpenMods
Planet Zoo content lives primarily on Steam Workshop and community sites. GitHub-published Planet Zoo content is rare. OpenMods catalogues whatever exists.
Practical notes
- Blueprints are the headline community content. Hundreds of thousands on Workshop. Subscribe, place in your zoo.
- True modding is limited. Engine constraints and lack of official tools.
- Frontier patches occasionally invalidate community tools. The community catches up but the cadence is slower than for games with official mod support.
