More about Crusader Kings II
Paradox's medieval predecessor to CK3
Crusader Kings II (2012) is the predecessor to CK3. Its modding scene is the original incubator for many of the patterns CK3 inherited, Workshop integration, the Paradox Launcher, script-based data modding. CK2's catalogue is enormous after a decade of work and remains active despite CK3's existence.
The headline mods are alternate-history total conversions: A Game of Thrones (CK2 AGOT) is arguably the most-played CK2 mod ever, Elder Kings (TES setting), After the End (post-apocalyptic North America), CK2+ (vanilla overhaul).
The toolchain
Same as CK3: Steam Workshop, Paradox Launcher, script-driven data, Tiger linter for CK2.
What you'll find on OpenMods
CK2 mods live primarily on Workshop. GitHub hosts source for some larger TCs. OpenMods catalogues GitHub-published CK2 mods.
Practical notes
- CK2 AGOT is the iconic mod. A Game of Thrones for CK2 set the bar for total conversions in the Paradox world.
- CK3 is the modern game. Most CK2 modders migrated; the CK2 catalogue is stable but not actively growing.
- DLC list is long. CK2 accumulated 15+ DLCs over its lifetime. Mods may require specific ones.
