Counter-Strike 2's Workshop-only modding
Counter-Strike 2 (2023) replaced CS:GO with a Source 2 engine upgrade. Modding is strictly Workshop-based: weapon skin previews, custom maps (community map pool), sticker designs. There's no script extender, no third-party loader, Valve's anti-cheat would not tolerate it for competitive play, and the design follows.
What's possible: subscribe to Workshop maps for casual play, contribute to Workshop competitions (Valve occasionally adds community maps to the official map pool), participate in skin design competitions.
The toolchain
- Steam Workshop: the sole sanctioned distribution channel.
- Source 2 Hammer (CS2): Valve's free level editor for CS2-specific maps.
- Workshop Tools: free in your CS2 Tools library.
What you'll find on OpenMods
CS2 mods don't really exist outside the Workshop in any practical sense. GitHub may host source for Workshop-published maps and skins. OpenMods catalogues whatever exists.
Practical notes
- Competitive play with mods is impossible. Valve's anti-cheat ensures this.
- Workshop maps are casual-mode only. Community maps don't appear in matchmaking unless Valve adds them.
- Skin design is a community ecosystem of its own. Workshop skin submissions can be voted into the official market if Valve picks them up.
- CS:GO and CS2 are different games for modding purposes. CS:GO Workshop content largely doesn't transfer to CS2.
