More about Beat Saber
Beat Saber's community-driven custom song scene
Beat Saber (2018, 1.0 in 2019) is Beat Games's VR rhythm game. The modding scene is enormous because vanilla Beat Saber's tracklist is small relative to demand, the community-built BeatSaver ecosystem distributes hundreds of thousands of player-created custom songs, plus mods that enable loading them.
The headline tool is ModAssistant, a community installer that downloads BSIPA (the mod loader), BeatSaber-related framework mods, and lets you browse and install custom songs.
The toolchain
- ModAssistant: community installer and mod manager.
- BSIPA (Beat Saber IL Patcher Adapter): the mod loader. ModAssistant installs it.
- BeatSaver: custom song hub.
- ScoreSaber / BeatLeader: community leaderboard systems for custom songs.
What you'll find on OpenMods
Beat Saber mods live primarily on BeatMods (the canonical mod repo) and GitHub. Custom songs live on BeatSaver. OpenMods catalogues GitHub-published Beat Saber mods.
Practical notes
- Beat Games's patches break mods frequently. Each Beat Saber update invalidates BSIPA and most mods. Wait for ModAssistant to catch up before patching.
- Steam vs Oculus version compatibility. Mostly the same, occasionally divergent.
- Quest standalone is a different ecosystem. This guide covers PC VR. Quest standalone modding uses BMBF and is separate.
- Custom songs are not "mods" technically. They're game-readable assets that play via a mod that enables custom-song loading.
