ETS2's American sibling, same engine, separate ecosystem
American Truck Simulator (2016) is SCS Software's North-American-focused truck simulator. Built on the same engine as Euro Truck Simulator 2 with the same modding architecture, but with a separate mod catalog focused on US/Canadian trucks, trailers, and map extensions.
The modding scene is meaningfully smaller than ETS2's, partly because European trucking has a larger PC simulation audience than American trucking, but the toolchain knowledge transfers directly.
The toolchain
Identical to ETS2: Steam Workshop, in-game Mod Manager, Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod/ folder, SCS Workshop Uploader.
What you'll find on OpenMods
ATS mods live primarily on Steam Workshop and a handful of community sites. GitHub-hosted ATS mods are typically the larger map mods. OpenMods catalogues these.
Practical notes
- Smaller but parallel ecosystem to ETS2. If you know how to mod ETS2, you can mod ATS, just with a smaller catalog to choose from.
- Map mods are the headliner. Coast to Coast and Project Mexico extend the base game's coverage substantially.
- DLC interactions matter. ATS has many state-by-state DLCs (Oklahoma, Texas, Idaho, Nebraska, etc.). Most maps mods coordinate with these.
- Save compatibility. Same rules as ETS2: truck mods are usually safe, map mods are not.
